Physical Education: The role it plays in academic achievement

With all the talk today about 21st century learning, I think it's important that we not only move toward those goals of learning with higher technology, but we must also encourage other methods of how to raise academic achievement. One of these other methods that will result in improvement in the classroom is the importance of physical education in our schools. With news of schools across the country limiting or even shutting down physical education programs there is no bigger time than now to remind the general public of its relevence. The youth of this nation needs this time during the school day to not only get an adequate period of excercise, but to also release some of their energy and have a time of fellowship with classmates. This will in return provide better behavior and concentration throughout the day and give the students something to look forward to during the school day. One other reason why this is especially important in this day in age is because of our nations growing obesity rate. We need to teach the new generation the importance of living a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and nutrition, so that they can lead long and successful lives. Not only will this make our students feel more confident about themselves physically but it will show mentally as well, and we all know how much better we can perform with a level of high self-esteem. So just keep this in mind when your thinking about how to raise academic performance in our schools, because it has many vital benefits for body, spirit, and mind.

Good point. In all the talk about new methods of education, physical education is often left out. With obesity and its side effects killing so many people each year you would think there'd be a bigger emphasis on this.

I totally agree with you. I think it's crazy to take out time for physical education in the school system. Everyone needs exercise, everyone needs to "let off some steam" before getting back to class, and the teachers need a break, too. School might be the only place some children even learn about exercise and needing to be in shape. So it's definitely important to inforce it. Reinforcing Physical Education will have an overall great effect for ever aspect of learning.

I agree. When I am looking for a good mood booster I hit the gym. It creates endorphines and get's my mind back on track!

i have heard of a school around here that doesn't make kids walk in a single file line anymore but instead they dance up and down the hallway when going somewhere. This helps them to have little activity throughout the day. Also they have a half hour of gym everyday instead of just once or twice a week.

Schools today are definitely getting away from PE and the arts, and they're very essential topics in a child's education.

I think it's very important. Obesity is outrageous right now and I think we need to start educating children early on about how to be healthy. Plus, gym was always the most fun part of the day. and fyi: your blog is under review or something.

very true. I think we sometimes forget that kids need time to be kids. If we want them to be able to sit still and learn, we need to give them time to be kids and use up some of that energy : )

P.E. should probably be brought back into a high degree of relevance now that the times are changing and the country needs a lot more exercise as a whole. I was really never a fan of P.E. but I could understand that it was important for me to go to and get it taken care of there or I probably would've never worked out ever.
